What’s a Home Collected Loan?

Whether you don’t have access to a bank account, or you simply prefer a more personal kind of service when it comes to your finances, home collected loans offer a straightforward alternative to mainstream borrowing.

These are small cash loans of £100 to £1000. Because they are delivered to you at home they are often called doorstep loans. You make fixed repayments to an agent who visits you each week.

Home Collection Loans:

  • Small cash loans of £100 to £1000
  • No bank account is required
  • Loans are organised on face to face basis at your home
  • Weekly repayments of a fixed amount collected by your agent
  • No hidden costs or charges

Face to face finance

The unique aspect of home collection loans is that you deal with a local agent, rather than speaking to a faceless voice over the telephone or having to make repayments via an online portal or via direct debit. This kind of face-to-face finance is preferable for many people, perhaps because of convenience or simply preference.

When you borrow money via a doorstep loan, the cash is delivered to you at home – a friendly local agent will assess your requirements and if the loan can proceed will work with you to make the final arrangements. They then deliver the money to you in person. They then visit each week to collect the agreed fixed repayment.

It is worth mentioning that lenders are moving with the times and it is perfectly possible for a borrower if they wish to apply online, get the loan paid directly to their bank account and make online or automated repayments.

Who are home collection loans for?

Anyone can apply for home credit like this – you need to make sure you meet the minimum lending conditions and subject to affordability you can borrow between £100 and £1,000. If you are an existing customer with a good repayment history then you may be able to enlarge your loan.

This kind of finance is particularly suited to anyone who wants the flexibility of the loan and repayments being made in person. This could include you if:

  1. you have been refused credit by mainstream lenders as a result of a less than perfect credit history.
  2. you don’t have a bank account and don’t want to have to go through the process of opening one simply so you can apply for finance.
  3. you prefer to use cash rather than transferring money electronically.
  4. you need the convenience of the cash being brought to you and the weekly repayment collections being made at your home.

A friendlier type of finance

For many people, opting for a home collected loan is a conscious choice to avoid the mainstream lending industry. It may be that you want to stay away from what is often seen as the high-pressure world of payday loans. Or you may not want to deal with bank employees in a call centre and instead want to work out your finances on an individual basis with someone you can trust. While you will still need to ensure that you make repayments on time and stick to the terms of the loan, there’s no doubt that home collection loans are a friendlier type of finance. They are a more personal way of borrowing and closer to the kind of community lending structures that used to dominate the debt market in the UK.

Other Information

Applying is straightforward

If you want to make an application then this is the only stage that takes place online. After that you are assigned a local agent who will be your point of contact throughout the lifetime of the loan.

You don’t have to agree anything online as you can discuss the terms of the loan with the agent when they come to your home.

Home payments

If you are happy with the terms of the loan then the agent will provide you with the cash loan at home. There are no bank transfers, no cheques, just the cash in hand. However, if you prefer and if you have a bank account the lender can arrange to pay the loan into it.

As your agent will be there in your home you can ask all the questions that you need answers to there and then.

Borrow what you need

Depending on the lender, there are various different amounts that you can borrow – between £100 and £400 if you want to borrow only a small amount or up to £1,000 if you need a little more.

For existing customers, the upper limit rises to a potential £2,500. All loans are subject to affordability.

Repayment is straightforward

You can choose a repayment period that works for you – there are shorter periods available, such as 13 or 22 weeks, or you can opt for a longer time frame (e.g. 34 or 52 weeks) in order to make smaller weekly payments.

The repayment amount that you will make for your loan is fixed in advance and there are no hidden payments or charges so you will never be caught out.

No late payment fees

Repayments are made on a weekly basis and the agent will come to your home to collect your repayment amount. There are not usually any fees if – for whatever reason – you end up making a late payment. You will normally be given a personal payment book so you can keep an eye on the payments that are going out, when they are due and when they have been made.

Be aware though that a late repayment is likely to be noted on your credit file and it could affect how you obtain credit in the future.
